Specific-Training: Top & Bottom Positional Drills
Marcelo designates 'short-time' rounds of specific-training for his advanced students to better understand which battles need to be won in the course of a match: The drills are conducted in the manner of commencing a round from either top or bottom position "with or without" certain controls. [0:00] Stand-Up Grip-Fighting w/o Take-Downs: Students must grapple to obtain their best grips for initiating a guard-pull or counter-attacking their respective opponent's pull towards the ground. Pairs on the floor have priority over the space; make sure not to run-over anyone if you are still standing up during the allotted time with your partner. [0:49] Open-Guard starting w/ a Collar-Grip Break: Live-Training begins as soon as the top-player strips off their partner's grip on their jacket collar. The guard-player on bottom must learn a set of contingencies for when they cannot maintain this dominant control to set-up an attack. [1:42] Half-Guard w/ an Under-Hook: The bottom partner begins with an Under-Hook secured while the top-player only has upright posture and non-committal base; despite the disadvantage in connection, the top player still has a chance to maneuver against the under-hook. No weight is placed on top of the Half-Guard until the round-timer signals for the short-timed round to commence. [2:48] Half-Mount w/ an Under-Hook: The bottom player still has an Under-Hook but must start flattened out with their back on the mat (as opposed to starting with a recumbent base laying themselves down on the side opposite of their under-hook. [4:37] Half-Mount w/o an Under-Hook: This time the top-player inside their opponent's Half-Guard has the crucial (far-side, outside, et al.) under-hook, as well as a cross-facing arm around the head fortified with a grip on the collar. The bottom-player must start completely flat with their shoulders pinned to the mat. The short round cannot end in a stalemate; either someone must pass, sweep, submit, or take-the-back. Each partner alternates top and bottom in the position and has a chance to contest for control over the asymmetrical configuration from both sides of the positional coin. [5:40] Side Control w/ Under-Hook & Head-Control: Bottom must escape, reverse, and/or recover from underneath the Cross-Side-Mount Position (cem-kilos, bengala-pin, kuzure-kesa-gatame, mune-gatame, cross-sides, cross-mount, et al.) while the top-player is obliged to advance or finish. [6:03] Grip-Fighting from Side-Control: The top-player assumes grips onto their opponent's collar/lapel and belt (no under-hook start), while bottom only has defensive frames developed. Top has to secure the top position (transitioning to Side-Control, North/South, or Full-Mount for the pass), and Bottom must recover guard or turtle out. [6:52] 2-on-1 Back Defense & Counter-Defense: The "bottom" player (with their back taken) starts with two hands on a single wrist, sleeve, or combination there-of to escape from the Back-Mount Position. The "top" player (behind their opponent) must find a way to maintain their position or transition into an attack.
