Takedown > Guillotine Escape from Side Control
2 Part Lesson -- Marcelo calculates the risks inherent to shooting in for a takedown: Try your best to finish "cleanly" when executing a Single or Double Leg Takedown; i.e. clearing your legs out of the Guard into Side Control. Otherwise, you may encounter the threat of strangulation while you are finishing, especially against long-armed individuals. Hop toward the safe-side and begin clearing your neck free from your opponent's grips. [07:19] If your opponent employs the High-Elbow variation of the Guillotine Choke, simply jumping to the "safe-side" isn't enough sometimes to stop the strangle from effectively throttling. Train yourself to reach high up and over the elbow to peel it off of your shoulder before escaping the submission. Once clear, make sure to grab the opponent's legs in case they try to turn over and reset the position back into his or her favor.
