“Tornado Sweep”
2 Part Lesson — Marcelo generates angular momentum with a long distance guard: [I] Starting from a Tripod Guard (aka "Goes" Guard, "Broken" De-la-riva Guard, Cross Guard, "Open" Guard, et al.), elevate your hips, switch your grip on the ankle from the outside to inside, and launch your foot behind your opponent for a Deep De-la-riva Hook. Use this hook to continue your spin, bringing your opposite leg up and through the opponent's base while you catch his far ankle. Use your feet on his hips to knock him backward with a variation of the Kagatogaeshi (Double Ankle Sweep, Lumberjack Sweep, Double Muscle Sweep, et al.). Quickly, hide your feet from his arms and hands by retracting them back under his knees and come up on top for the sweep. Before Cyborg Abreu made his "Tornado Guard" a popular position in the sport, this particular spinning sweep using the Deep-dlr Hook was known as the "Tornado Sweep from Open Guard." [II] Learn how to coordinate the entirety of your body to generate the momentum for a faster and faster spin. This sweep is a great example of how to take the space you have around your limbs to help build up a strong movement for an attack.
