Breaking Gi Grips from Butterfly
2 Part Lesson — Marcelo hand-fights from Seated Butterfly: [I] Sitting upright affords you the greatest chances of success when grappling against larger opponents; not only does it protect you better from Leglocks, but it also creates a greater distance for your opponent to overcome in order to pass your guard. Swat away your opponent's attempts to grab onto your pants, and if you must grab his wrist to break, extend your leg in the opposite direction of your pull to help take his hand off of your gi. If your opponent grabs your collar, react similarly; immediately look to break off his grip before it settles and hardens. If while you are trying to break off the collar grip, he grabs onto your leg and runs around to pass, use your free leg to catch the opponents hips and square up. [II] After you break the grip off of your collar, turn it into 2on1 Control and sit up. If he is one his knees, find his belt for the Cross Arm & Belt Sweep. If he is standing, shoot under for 1LX Guard for the sweep.
