Sweeps from Vale Tudo Guard
1 Part Lesson -- Paul demonstrates two transitions from a defensive open guard: If striking is presumed, and you cannot readily break your opponent's posture down into a clinching style guard, maintain a safe distance by inserting your knees/shins against your opponent's shoulders and elevating your hips. If your opponent tries to get around your legs by throwing them off to the side, split your knees apart and assume a Scissors-Guard (Knee-Shield w/ Foot-on-the-Hip, Open Guard, et al.) to prevent your opponent from closing the distance with a punch. If you control the inside/near arm, execute a Scissors Sweep and/or kick-out their base at the knee. If you dominate the far/outside arm, utilize a drag to help take their back.
