Jake Shields looks on as Marcelo and Jimmy discuss the protocol for maintaining control during the Turning Pass vs Half Guard. If you feel your opponent escape his hips enough to possibly capture your back, immediately spin back around and trade your failing cross underhook for the regular underhook. The stability of the control you switch to will depend on how far away he manages to escape; if possible try to secure the Half Guard with Underhook & Head Control. However, Marcelo explains that you may have to settle for a heavy and low Over Under Control instead when you make up for your mistake. Any time your opponent beats you positionally, commit it to memory, so that you may address the same situation again appropriately and continually sharpen your game. Marcelo also explains that if attempting this pass in Nogi, you have to concentrate on dedicating a strong emphasis on holding his hips away with your hands digging into his sides. If possible, beat his arms early and lay your weight high across his body with your cross underhook to buy even more time to free your leg from his Half Guard and establish the pass.

Marcelo's ability to break down his game into (for lack of a better phrase) simple common sense sequences is astounding! He makes everything appear so simple and obvious!
