2 Part Technique - Breaking the Closed Guard starts with safely posting on either your opponent's wrists, arms, or throat, to find your bearings and to begin standing to your feet. While standing, you will have to free your arms from whatever hold you used to stand with so you can underhook his leg and punch open his guard. This is a moment where your opponent can try to sweep you by holding on to your ankles and shifting his hips. When this happens, kick your foot forward, then swing it backward, posting out of range of his grasp. However, if you didn't get a chance to underhook his leg and uncross his ankles with your arm, you will likely need to reset and start again. This next try, buy yourself extra time to pry off his guard by stepping directly onto his bicep when you go to stand up. By the time he frees his arm, you should be able to break his guard by then, or at the very least, gain a few more seconds with the wax-off trick.

Yeah I have no doubt Marcelo has an answer to this, and can easily pull it off! I would love to see him address this question.

I think I remember seeing him use technique 2 in his match versus Xande Ribeiro. Looks like it takes a lot of practice and confidence to execute well.

The only problem I see with technique 2 is that after the sweep, the opponent is not going to just lay there and let you get your legs back. Using the momentum, he will open his legs and mount you.
