2 Part Technique - Create distance using an inside control to posture safely. The best way to break the opponent's closed guard is by standing. Premeditate when the opponent grabs your ankle and kick your leg out in a circular motion. The ending stance may not look balanced, but it will be enough the control the situation. If the opponent's legs are stronger, use your arm to rip open his legs. No matter how strong the opponent's guard is, you can break it open with your arm, but it may take longer. If the opponent forces you to sit, use a stiff arm and reset the position.

I really love this idea of always standing to break the guard because for years i've broken guard mainly from my knees and have always been susceptible to sweeps or submissions. Now that i stand up and open guard in Marcelo's manner, my opponents are less likely to control me. I love it, thanks Marcelo!
