2 Part Technique - If the opponent brings his knees together to block your Knee Slide Pass, use Collar and Elbow Control to pull up and expose space to Mount. Mounting against the Butterfly can be risky, but generally it is worth the attempt. Leg Over against the opponent when he closes his Half Guard to prevent the Mount. If the opponent reaches to block your Leg Over Pass, this can be a good opportunity to pull his vulnerable arm upwards for the Spiral Armbar from Mount. Use a Knee Parry against the opponent if he swims his leg back inside when you first stepped forward with Collar and Elbow Control.

Usually I think he deals with grips by breaking them. If you watch his Gi rolls he's very fast and efficient at breaking grips on skilled opponents. It works without the break here because of the elbow control and speed of application. The grip on that side of the chest isn't as serious a threat when it can be short circuited at the elbow. Just my conjecture.

Check out his closed guard vids to see how the grip break can be quickly turned into a control.

See how the guy is grabbing Marcelo's collar? For example during 00:02 through 00:45? I like this technique because it gives me an option for when guys grab my collar especially when starting from the knees. If you know of anymore videos wherein Marcelo teaches tactics for when the guy has your collar, let me know.

Marcelo used to call this a monoplata on his last DVD.
