Hand Fighting vs Butterfly Guard, Hand Fighting from Butterfly Guard
Marcelo prioritizes aspects of Hand-Fighting: If you are kneeling in front of a seated opponent, immediately clear away any Collar-Ties around your neck, and then convert them into a dominant 2on1-Grip. Whether you end up blocking from the inside-out, or slipping their hand off by pushing it from the outside-in, catch a hold of their arm after it comes off of your head and use your other hand to help immobilize. Since their arm will be compromised, quickly take advantage and attempt a pass towards this defective side before they have a chance to neutralize your control. If you focus on your opponent's legs while they have an upper body control, you may run yourself into a costly mistake; free your head first and then work on passing around your opponent's legs. However, if the roles are reversed and you are the one playing bottom position, give priority to your opponent's legs, particularly if they are standing to pass. Use your feet or even knees to help block your opponent's hips from getting closer before pummeling your hands inside to clear away a Collar-Tie. You can then convert their loss of control into offense of your own, e.g. an Arm-Drag into a Reverse Hook-Sweep or an entry into 1Leg X.
