Straight Footlock vs Open Guard
Master Fabio Gurgel briefly demonstrates to Josh & Paul an effective finish for an Ankle-Lock: One doesn't necessarily have to apply pressure to an opponent's ankle in a linear manner, as the moniker of 'Straight' Ankle-Lock would seemingly imply; it is possible and legal under most major rulesets to impart an inversion pressure against the joint while holding the classic 'Botinha' style grip. Try to catch your partner's ankle in a relaxed position so that it can be bent laterally using a high-wrist and slight twist with your forearm. This technique, however subtle, is so powerful that it can oftentimes be caught from a standing position with your opponent's hips free from any kind of direct immobilization.
