3-Part Fundamental Lesson -- Paul resorts to Open-Guard Sweeps as a reaction to getting his Closed-Guard broken: If your opponent is standing up and about to break open your Closed-Guard, immediately switch for a Cross-Guard; make a cross-grip on their sleeve while placing your foot against their hip as a frame. Grab onto their near-ankle with your opposite hand, and your other foot can hide underneath their far-leg as a Butterfly-Hook to help maintain connection and also off-balance. [3:02] Execute a Tripod-Sweep from Cross-Guard by kicking out their far-foot as you pull against their near-ankle and push with your foot on their hip. Use the momentum of their fall to ride up on top and find your base. You can use your Butterfly-Hook to collect their legs together and prevent them from standing back up off the mat. [4:33] If your opponent kicks out of the Tripod-Sweep, switch your Cross-Grip to a same-side sleeve grip, and use your Butterfly-Hook to help feed their far-ankle into your now free-hand. Switch your foot from their hip to the other side, facing your knee in the opposite direction, and look to swipe out their newly freed leg with your bottom foot for a Hammer & Sickle-Sweep.
