Straight-Choke vs Mata-Leão
Marcelo describes the importance of mastering several finishing variations of the Rear Naked Choke: When applying your arm across your opponent's neck for strangulation, there are a multitude of ways to secure your grips so that your opponent succumbs to the pressure and is forced to tap-out; the two most important of which are the "Rear-Naked" (a.k.a. Lion-Killer, Ushiro-Hadaka-Jime, Figure-4 Finish, Sleeper-Hold, et al.) i.e., locked with a hand placed behind your opponent's head, and the "Straight-Choke" (a.k.a Short-Choke, Throat-Crush, Straight-Across, Palm-to-Palm, et al.) i.e., locked with a Gable-Grip and your forearm wedging behind their shoulder. Ideally, one would opt for a clean shot around an undefended neck directly into the Rear-Naked with your arms enlaced; however, going for this when your opponent knows to tuck their chin in defense can be problematic. This is when you should attempt to dig underneath and secure a grip onto your opponent's trapezius, and then make the jump from their shoulder to your own palm for the Gable-Grip finish. While the Straight-Choke is useful in that it can be applied incrementally through your opponent's defenses, the classic Rear-Naked finish is oftentimes the more powerful option if you can find the right moment to secure it.
