Marcelo & Scott help Jon prioritize his movement selection when encountering an opponent who intends on passing his Butterfly-Guard (Seated Guard, Sit-Up Guard, Upright-Guard, Sitting Guard, Hooks-Guard, et al.) with a Standing Knee-Cut (Knee-Slide, Knee-Slice, Margarida/Romulo Pass, et al.). Ideally, control your opponent's hands before they step inside and enter into a split-squat scenario; this will afford you the option to release the grips on your own timing so that you may readily capture the opponent's knee with Single-Leg Control. If you disregard your opponent's hands or let them control your own, you might not be able to change focus in time and address any potential passing threats toward Side Control or Mount. Anticipate this set of possibilities when engaging a standing opponent while sitting up to face them from Butterfly-Guard. Be ready to scoot away from opponent's advances and only engage on your own terms. If your hands get stuck as they cut, fight hard to set them free while making space up and/or out. You can also slow down your opponent by sticking them with an extended jab from your foot onto their trailing-leg during a cut or split. This particular option works much better when your opponent no longer seeks to control your legs with pant-grips, hence its efficacy for No-Gi.
