2 Part Lesson -- Marcelo picks up his opponent to break the Closed Guard: If you are worried about your opponent entangling your legs or hitting you with a sweep (Kagatogaeshi, Lumberjack, Muscle, Double Ankle, Roleta, Macarrao, et al.), you can try to use an Underhook to lift your opponent up off the mat and away from your feet while you work to break open their Closed Guard. Keep your elbow tucked in tightly as if holding yourself in place on a pull-up bar with a chin-up grip. Once your opponent's guard breaks open, immediately land in Half Guard for the Over/Under Pass. [05:32] If your opponent starts to attack your Underhook, let your arm slip out before you are in any real danger and look to push the legs open. If you cannot break the guard while standing, go back down and start again but this time ready for the attack on your Underhook.
