Breaking the Closed Guard
2 Part Lesson -- Marcelo speaks on protecting your legs when applying a Standing-Break: Try your best to dedicate both hands against the pants of your opponent when standing up to break open the Closed Guard. Keep your balance and prevent falling over from a Muscle Sweep or Lumberjack Sweep (Double Ankle, Kagatogaeshi, et cetera); keep your lead leg strong in base so that if your opponent throws his or her weight against your knee, it doesn't buckle under the pressure. [05:03] Train with a partner where you start standing inside the Closed with your opponent brought up off the mat with you. Keep strong base and work to get out of the Closed Guard. Staying inside the Closed Guard is risky because if you are swept to mount and held down, it will be very hard to recover back six points in a timed round.
