Back Escapes
2 Part Lesson -- Paul teaches Back-Escapes from both the Strong-Side & Weak-Side Back Control: Pummel your head underneath your opponent's head while defending against the choking arm with both hands. Seek to place your shoulders on the mat by bridging weight up onto them, making it harder for the opponent to peel your back up off the mat. Transition to either Half Guard, Single-Leg X-Guard, or possibly Side Control (Top) depending upon circumstance and preference. [07:44] If your opponent brings you back to his or her Strong-Side Back Control (the choking arm is your pillow), High-Leg-Over and beat the opponent to the opposite side finding a strong base and pinning down his or her shoulder. Grab the lapel behind your head and pull your head out of danger by sitting back onto your heels in the Half Guard. Find an Underhook from the Half Mount Position to pass into Side Control.
