Bow and Arrow Choke vs Standing Opponent
3 Part Lesson -- Marcelo shares his favorite strangulation with the gi from the back: Marcelo contends that fancier versions of the Bow & Arrow Choke (aka Othenjime, Berimbau, et cetera) that specifically incorporate one's leg against the opponent's head are overkill and unnecessary for accomplishing the task. Furthermore, creating space to insert a shin can cause needless separation that may result in helping the opponent escape. He suggests sticking with the tried-and-true, simplistic standard variation which consists of isolating the near-side leg (with an Underhook as opposed to Pant-Grip) and pulling the collar across the neck. If an opponent is resisting defeat by pulling on your sleeve, you may utilize your outside leg to scrape off the opponent's grips to help finish the choke. [06:12] Seek this choke from standing position when behind the opponent on the back with hooks set. Oftentimes, opponents are not worried enough about protecting their neck in this position and are apt to getting caught off-guard. Lean over and catch the opponent's leg, forcing them into a roll where you can land on top. [11:56] When rolling over, you can swing your leg out from underneath from the top or pull it from the bottom depending on preference and convenience lent from the fall.
