Turtle Escapes
3 Part Lesson — Marcelo covers several options for avoiding the control of your back from your opponent: [I] After defending against an Arm Triangle from the Front Headlock Position with the Dead-Frog Technique, i.e. planking your weight onto their arms to avoid them going deeper around your neck, immediately tuck into the Turtle Guard Position and defend your near-side. If the opponent's knee isn't occupying the gap between your knee and elbow, opt for a turning guard recovery and slide your far knee underneath as you begin framing against top pressure. [II] If the near-side is blocked, start freeing your far-side from the opponent's grips. After you clear their arm from your armpit, dive into a Granby Roll. Wedge your hips and then feet between yourselves to recover back an Open Guard. [III] Don't allow your opponent to stack you while upside down; immediately work to place your whole back onto the mat by using your legs to help kick the opponent off of you. Aim to place your neck on the mat and both shoulders before trying to place your lower back on the mat with the roll.
