Posture vs Spider Guard Lasso → Inside Knee Control vs Spider Guard → Circle Pass vs Spider Hook → Omoplata Escape
3 Part Lesson — Marcelo surpasses the Spider: [I] Whenever you are under imbalance inside of your opponent's Spider Guard, make counter-grips anywhere you can affirm your hands; this can be the pants, belts, jacket, lapel. Find your footing and reclaim a strong base, lifting the opponent up off the mat like a strong Dead-Lift movement. Hold the position until the Stirrup (Foot-On-Biceps) Spider Hook Control weakens or you use your knee to knock the back of their knee. Drop low and free your opposite hand from the Lasso with the inch-worming technique around the knee. If the opponent releases your sleeves to attack your base by grabbing your ankles for the Double Ankle Sweep, kick-out your trail leg (not the leg your prefer to lead nearest inside). [II] Before dropping back down inside the guard after clearing the Stirrup, weave your hand to the inside of the knee and use your shin to place weight down on your opponent's leg. Don't allow your opponent to win the hand-fight and be careful with your weight; don't fall prey to Tilt Sweeps with their Lasso. Try to beat the knee of the Lasso and begin dropping weight down on it for a Circle Pass (with a Long-Step Pass Collar Grip). [III] If your opponent inverts underneath while still holding onto your sleeve via the Lasso (-Guard) Hook, don't allow them to counter with an Omoplata or K-Guard Kneebar. Plant your feet and posture straight up, again; make the opponent carry their own weight and deprive them of the support from the ground. You can aid the lift by grabbing the back of the pants as you yank upward and rise up to your feet from a half-kneel. If your arm releases early, be wary of your opponent seizing your legs. High-Step up and out of danger before it's too late.
