Over Under Control from Butterfly → Hook Sweep from Butterfly
3 Part Lesson — Marcelo masterfully explains his legendary Hook Sweep from Butterfly Guard: [I] Close the distance from the Upright Seated Guard Position against a kneeling opponent with Over/Under Control. Your elbows must be active in this control; the Underhook must carry and load the weight of the opponent while the Overhook must push inward on the arm to stop a potential post. When close under, turn down over onto your side while elevating the opponent's hips with your Butterfly Hook opposite from your Underhook, and use your other leg to push off of the mat to help gain height. As soon as the opponent breaks over the hook, turn through and take the top position. [II] You must develop proficiency in this sweep for times when your opponent is withdrawing from your Over/Under Control by knee-walking backwards. Use your hooks to help pull yourself closer to the opponent when they try to create a gap of space between your bodies. Suck yourself under and keep your knees bent with your feet close to your butt for power; if your hooks extend outward away from your center, you will encounter difficulty in lifting the opponet up off the mat. [III] If your opponent is much taller, and can post his or her leg out at your max elevation with the sweep, take your bottom leg from the mat and retract it back towards your body. When your knee is close again, place your foot on top of the opponent's posting leg and kick it out to finish the sweep.
