2 Part Lesson — Marcelo gives us some insight on how he problem solves the unexpected: [I] You have to learn how to think of your body as a physical tool, that can be maneuvered efficiently and effectively, regardless of whether or not you know an actual step-by-step technique or set of instructions. When facing a guard player who wants to wrap you up with your own lapel, you don't necessarily have to know the specific details of every part of his plan; you just have to stay cautious, be observant, and think through the situation in terms of the innate physics. Solving a calculation can take too much time, and it might be too late before you come up with an approach. Rather, feel out the position and adjust your body to best accommodate your gap in knowledge by at least neutralizing the opponent's progress in a safe manner. For example, sit on the opponents arm when he feeds the lapel through your leg until his arm falls asleep or he releases it from exhaustion. You can also try pinning the same-side shoulder and sprawling your leg back until the grip breaks. Immediately capture his sleeve and work to break out of the Closed Guard; close the distance quickly after it opens to avoid giving the opponent room to counter. [II] If sprawling the leg back against the Lapel Grip doesn't work out, try hugging over the opponent's elbow and stacking them in a tripod like position. Slowly, force your leg back against the grip until the opponent has to let go or changes their mind.
