Elbow Escape vs Mount → Hook Sweep from Closed Guard
2 Part Lesson — Paul expounds on the subtle difference between a Hip-Escape and the Elbow-Escape: [I] When performing the Elbow Escape or Elbow/Knee Escape from the bottom of the Mount Position, your hips remain stationary while your upper body crunches forward, allowing you to slide the opponent's knee between your legs for (at least half) guard. Immediately, turn over to the opposite side and address the possibility (and in many case, inevitability) of the Cross-Face; use your arms to frame the opponent away from controlling your head while you free your other leg back to Closed Guard. [II] Break the opponent's posture down inside your Closed Guard and Hip-Escape out to the side for an angle of attack. Your leg should be placed heavily on the opponent's back to help keep his posture broken down for attack. If your opponent steps up to stack you and place your back back flat on the mat, hip escape out the other direction and encircle your foot to the inside as a Butterfly Hook against the stepped-up leg. Turn your upper body toward the direction of your control over the opponent's arm and elevate his or her weight with the inside-hook to execute the sweep.
