Marcelo has his advanced students prepositionally spar for first score: Partners start in a Seated Body-Lock Position; the Top-Player must score with a Guard-Pass, Knee-on-Belly, or transition to Back-Mount. The Bottom-Player must earn a Sweep or Take-the-Back with both hooks. The first to score points based on the IBJJF Rules stays in and faces the outside pair protector on the next restart in the opposite role of the pre-start position. Takedowns from the Neutral Position are prohibited in this exercise; Standing-Sweeps (Take-Ups from Guard, e.g. a Single-Leg) are strongly discouraged unless they can be finished immediately and safely, i.e. without stalling on-the-feet after the rise up from the mat and also performed without colliding with another group. All groups are instructed to avoid situations that could evoke Burying or Spiking the head against an Outside-Single, as well as uncontrolled falling body-weight onto the legs from sitting down or hanging off the back.
