Breaking the Closed Guard
2 Part Lesson — Marcelo avoids trouble inside the Closed Guard: [I] If your opponent manages to secure an Underhook on the arm that you prefer to press down and break open the Closed Guard from standing, drive forward towards a stack and keep his hips centered on line. Pummel your forearm back in front of his face before he has a chance to capitalize off of the Underhook. You cannot simply place your arm in front casually; you must forcefully swing your arm back in front the moment you release the forward pressure and that gap of space for the pummel. Double up on the frame if you cannot break free and reset back to a safe control inside the guard. [II] If your opponent grabs your forearm to cross it through the center-line for an Armdrag style back-take, dig and hide your elbow down by his hip and use your other hand to feed the same-side lapel into the opposite hand to stabilize the position. Immediately work up to your feet and put pressure on the ankles to break open out of the Closed Guard.
