3 Part Lesson — Marcelo addresses attacks to your legs after standing against Closed Guard: [I] Don't let your opponent get ahead, whether it be a large movement or small. There's no telling how much of a cost you will pay by allowing your opponent to play his game step by step. If your opponent underhooks your leg for a Muscle Sweep as you stand up to break his Closed Guard and you feel off-balance, just go back down to the ground and kneel. Curl your heel backward against his Underhook and place weight down on your knee to prevent him from exploiting the hold. Focus on sprawling free, pummeling, or stretching out his side to release your leg and start anew. [II] Really drop heavily onto his arm to help bend his leg against your hip to keep yourself safe from attack. [III] If your opponent gets under your foot and doesn't allow you to even flex your leg back to safety, drop straight down into a split-legged kneel before he can finish the Muscle (Handstand) Sweep, pummel for a Leg-Lock, or improve his guard. If your legs are short, retract them from his grip when he least expects you to pull. If your legs are longer, you can try to curl your foot back under your base rather than slipping out.
