Back-Step Pass vs De-la-Riva Guard
2 Part Lesson — Marcelo explicates the intricacies of his Back-Step Pass against the De-la-Riva Guard: [I] Post on the heel of the palm of your hand, grabbing the same-side lapel; when you back-step, twist the grip to further stabilize your hold. Point your lead leg's knee diagonally to the outside. This will help you avoid the Deep De-la-Riva Hook on your far leg; if he or she does manage to form the hook on your trailing thigh, try to step up and out back to Headquarters. Use your free hand to grab your opponent's opposite leg and avoid letting him kick your chest, side or leg. Balance yourself above your opponent in the Back-Step Position until you can pummel for the Reverse Underhook and transition to North/South for the pass. [II] Sometimes, you can extract your leg out of the opponent's guard if they happen to loosen up or lose the grip around your ankle. If they use the DLR-Hook to off-balance you, lay heavily on their leg to cause tension and stress the grip. This requires finding your balance, but if you can find it, you can pick up your Back-Step foot and stomp off the grip to pass. If they grab your collar, land with the Reverse Underhook; if they continue to hold your sleeve, hover above and wait out the position or circle back inside to the "Headquarters" Position.
