Back Escape
3 Part Lesson — Marcelo assesses the risk involved in escaping from the Back: [I] Protect yourself from your opponent setting in the top hook for Back Mount and 4 points by curling up your side, overlapping your knee and elbow together. Use your bottom foot to press off the mat and flip you to the Escape-Side. If your opponent slips his foot through, use your hand to dig his heel back out of your lap but beware of the attack on your neck. [II] If you cannot readily flip to the opposite side using your bottom foot, you can always generate momentum in the other direction and roll through to your target-side. When the opponent latches onto your collar to pull the choke, take the chance to undermine his control by sneaking your hand under his forearm and popping off his grip, catching his arm and planting your shoulders onto the mat for the escape. [III] Marcelo does not believe in the use of cranking the jaw or face to get the tap. This method can be unreliable and inefficient against larger, hardier opponent's who can withstand the discomfort, thus rendering you exhausted. There are many technical opportunities to find a way under the chin that should be trained for an efficient approach toward the submission. Beware of opponents who will rely on this technique for its practicality, especially if they have a strength advantage, despite its lack of technical precision.
