2 Part Lesson — Marcelo stresses the issue of stability while Breaking the Closed Guard and thereafter: [I] If your opponent avoids making grips on your arms, pop up to your feet and immediately latch onto one of knees to begin pressing down for the Guard Break. Once his ankles uncross, pin his leg to the mat with all of your weight through your grip and find whichever pass is best available; whether it be a Knee Slide, Single Stack, or even just Forcing Half. [II] If your opponent binds up your arms and you do not have the time to address breaking off his grips, pop up to your feet, lean back strongly, and make a quick grip transfer from his jacket to his pants for the break. If he releases the Closed Guard early in anticipation of your break, immediately prevent any window of opportunity for him or her to place his feet on helpful points of your body. Block the inside space between your knee and elbow on whichever side he tries to formulate a meaningful control.
