3 Part Lesson — Marcelo explains some strategies and tactics for Kumikata (Grip Fighting) during Tachiwaza (Stand-Up): [I] Don't show your opponent which grip you prefer to initiate your throw or takedown; instead, mask your attempt to establish your strongest grip by faking toward a different spot on his jacket, reaching out with your opposite hand, or feigning a control on his head first, before setting your favored grip. Before your opponent has a chance to make defensive efforts or form counter posts to your forward progress, use your grip on his gi to setup for your takedown or throw. [II] If your opponent dedicates two hands to break off your best grip, quickly supplement it by latching onto your opponent's back with your opposite hand and pulling yourself close. This will slow his ability to break away your best grip and give you enough time to still setup for your shot. [III] If your opponent breaks away from your best offensive grip, switch tactics and make grips to pull guard directly into your best sweep.
