Intro to Spider/Open Guard Attacks
6 Part Lesson — Paul explains a variety of closely related Open Guard Attacks: [I; 0:00-4:13] "You're the only one who can open your guard." -- Never allow your opponent to gain the initiative and find his pass when your guard is about to break open. If you feel your opponent begin to win, immediately open your guard on your own timing and place a foot on his hip to keep distance while you ensnare his arm with a Spider Hook (Foot-on-Biceps aka "Stirrup"). Drill with your partner the movements and shifting of weight necessary for keeping square while he circles around in both directions. [II; 4:14-7:57] Use your Foot-on-the-Hip as the primary sensor for your opponent's weight distribution; if you feel him leaning forward, use "Scary-Hands" and elevate with your feet to hit the Balloon Sweep into Mount. [III; 7:58-10:06] You can setup the Balloon Sweep when your opponent isn't giving you the correct pressure by making him react with your Spider Hook. Extend your Stirrup to force his weight forward for the sweep. [IV; 10:07-12:20] If your opponent is pulling back away from your Overhead Sweeps, check to see if his ankle is within reach for the Sickle Sweep. [V; 12:21-15:28] If the Sickle Sweep isn't available, switch for the Cross Grip and perform the Tripod Sweep. Paul briefly explicates the etymology of the two similar sweeps. [VI; 15:29-17:53] Your grip on your opponent's ankle needs to cover his toes so he cannot readily kick free out of the open space between your arm and your side. When the opportunity presents itself, strike with a Triangle off of the Stirrup Control; raise your hips up high as you bite down to close the figure-four.
