Back Step Pass vs Half Guard, Back Step Half Guard to Back Control
2 Part Lesson -- Marcelo shows a nice transition to the back from the back step half guard position. [I] If you find yourself in your opponent's half guard and he has already established a deep underhook, your options from there are very limited. One option is to back step and pummel for the reverse underhook and then kick your leg free for the pass. If, however, you back step and pummel for the reverse underhook, but have a difficult time freeing your leg because your opponent is holding it tightly then take this opportunity to work a transition to his back. Begin pulling him on top, but be sure to escape your hips and keep his near arm behind you so he cannot escape your control and settle into a top position. After you have exposed his back, swing your leg over top of him, as you look to establish seatbelt control and the hooks to complete your transition to his back. [II] Marcelo continues with the last transition, but focuses on several additional details. He begins by emphasizing the importance of escaping your hips, as you pull your opponent up to his knees to expose his back. He also mentions when facing someone who isn't readily coming up, you can re-enforce your pulling power with a grip on his pants with your free hand. This grip, not only aids in pulling him on top, but can also serve to block his leg from stepping over into mount, as you pull. One very powerful grip you can use to secure your control over your opponent, as you pull him and transition to his back is the far side lapel grip with your underhooking hand. Secure your grip on his lapel and then drive your elbow into his near shoulder. Doing so will make it extremely difficult for him to eliminate the exposure of his back. Continue, as before, and complete the transition to the back.
