2 Part Lesson — Marcelo discusses with his class how to deal with two common methods of escaping the 1Leg X Guard: [I] After obtaining the 1Leg X position, your opponent may attempt to simply step out of your hold, bringing his knee high up to his chest and freeing his foot. When you feel this about to happen, immediately tense up and pinch his knee tightly. Follow up by rocking back and forth before hitting the 1Leg X Guard Sweep. [II] Another common escape is for your opponent to back step, similar to a capoeira movement, which may cause you to loosen your hold and even hurt your neck in the transition. Follow the opponent's spin with a spin of your own, tucking your head underneath your shoulder in a Granby-like roll, all the while maintaining a squeeze with your legs.
