2 Part Lesson — Marcelo shows how to circumvent his opponent's Spider Guard offense when he tries to pass the Open Guard with Inside or Outside Knee Control over the pants. Whenever you have a hand free after breaking the sleeve grip, immediately claim a better position to pass. [I] If you advance with Inside Control over his pants, choose a side to free your hand from the opponent's grips on your sleeves and drop your shin on his hand as you rip your arm upward. Once freed, close the distance with any number of passes; Double Knee Slide, Back Step, or even Force Half. [II] If you advance into the Spider Guard with Outside Control over his knees, hug his shins into your belly and break his grip off with your shin. As soon as your hand is free, immediately look to pass, e.g. with the Folding or Toreando, and move forward with reaction rather than premeditated planning.
