3 Part Technique - Since everyone who trains under Marcelo at his academy is well-versed in the 1Leg X Guard Sweep, many in-house strategies have been developed to counter the position. Regardless of the tactic employed, Marcelo maintains that one's success with the sweep is predicated on how well you fight to recover your 1Leg X-Hooks by never losing control over the opponent's ankle. As long as you can keep the ankle held, you can frame space, chase with the hooks, and prepare a secondary attack. In the event that the opponent is able to sufficiently kneel his weight onto your arm before you can recover, use whatever is within reach to help ward off his remaining weight. For example, upon successfully back-stepping out of the hooks, grab onto his collar or belt for the Pumphandle Grip and use it to sweep with a Double.
