3 Part Lesson — Marcelo clears his opponent's defenses when kept down: [I] If your opponent is posting on your head to open up space and free his foot from your Single Leg Control, use your free arm to knock away his hands before coming up for the takedown. If he tries to change the angle with a Back-Step, use your inside leg to hook his far knee and square back up. [II] If your opponent picks your leg up off the mat, stay tight with your chest against his knee and circle your ankle out of his grip. [III] If you cannot free your leg from the pick, momentarily create a gap with the Single Leg Control to give yourself more room to circle your foot free. If your leg is too long to circle out, use your hand to break his grip but remember that while your hand is busy, you no longer have a post behind to keep from getting knocked flat.
